14Free Episode 3 - St. Johnsbury School

14Free, episode 3 highlights a very special Food Service Director at St. Johnsbury Elementary School.  Carol Brill has been serving meals to children for 34 years and has decided not to retire until she feels confident the school will continue to love and nourish the children when she’s no longer there.

St. Johnsbury Elementary has a high percentage of free and reduced-price eligible children who go through the lunch line every day.  However, Carol and her staff have often seen children who don’t qualify for the federal programs go without meals because their parents simply can’t afford to pay the additional cost of school meals or items for a sack lunch.  Because of this, Carol and school personnel anonymously “adopt” these children and pay for their meals out of their own pockets.  Carol and her team frequently offer children taste tests of new fruits and vegetables.  They provide children numerous healthy choices in the lunch line, and they greet every child with loving smile.

Carol told me off camera, with tears in her eyes, that she wished all schools provided free meals to all children.
