14Free, Episode 10: Rutland County

In Episode 10 of 14Free, we visit a Learning Kitchen class at the Rutland Parent/Child Center. The Learning Kitchen (formerly Cooking for Life) is a nutrition education course administered by Hunger Free Vermont. Each year Hunger Free Vermont works with partners across the state to bring these series to low-income youth and adults in order to help teach cooking, nutrition, and grocery budgeting skills. In this video you will learn how these young parents (or parents-to-be) are learning how to cook meals from scratch, tips on using their WIC benefits and 3SquaresVT (formerly Food Stamps) benefits at local farmers’ markets, and budgeting skills so that they can maximize their 3SquaresVT benefits to provide the most healthful food for their families. The Lead Cook for the child care at the Center, Dana Pellistri, understands how crucial this nutrition education is for the health of the parents and kids at the center—and how it can help inform life-long eating habits for the better.
