Breakfast on the Go!

Guest Blog post by our Finance Director, Sally Hartford

We’ve all been there; too many things to do to get out the door in the morning, let alone worry about preparing a healthy breakfast. However, studies have shown that skipping breakfast has detrimental effects on your body including decreased mental alertness and slower metabolism for the rest of the day. A great alternative to skipping breakfast is the very versatile breakfast smoothie. Tailor it to your favorite flavors and I guarantee you won’t be skipping breakfast anymore!

8 oz. Low-fat or Light Soy milk
1 teaspoon ground flaxseed
Fruit of your choice   (I’m partial to berries)   Start with ½ cup of fruit and adjust the quantity to your taste.
Add ice if you’d like your smoothie to be a bit thicker.

Turn on the blender and you’ve got a healthy start to your day.

This post is part of our month-long blog series in celebration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' "National Nutrition Month." This year's theme is, "Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day," so each of us here at Hunger Free Vermont will take a turn to share a personal goal, story or fact regarding nutrition through daily blog posts throughout the month.
