The upcoming Farm Bill has far-reaching implications for food assistance funding in the United States. One particular program that is in danger of funding cuts is SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), known in Vermont as 3SquaresVT. This program is an important food resource for many Vermonters, including children, seniors, and those with disabilities. If the SNAP cuts proposed by the House Agriculture Committee go into effect, many Vermonters will lose this nutrition safety net and struggle even further to put food on the table for themselves and their families.
Luckily, Vermont has advocates in Washington who see the importance of the SNAP program and are willing to stand up and take action in the face of these threats. Last week, Senator Gillibrand (D-NY) submitted a letter in support of SNAP funding to the leadership of the Senate Agriculture Committee. Vermont Senators Patrick Leahy and Bernie Sanders signed this letter and pledged their support of full funding for SNAP in the upcoming Farm Bill. We applaud their leadership in recognizing the importance of this program for struggling Vermonters, and are proud to have them as partners in our work.
